Divyashree’s parents attended a medical camp outside of Bangalore. She had both a cleft lip and cleft palate. After her lip repair, Santhosh and Susan had a chance to visit her home with our surgeon, Dr. Sathish. To our surprise, she had an older brother with a cleft palate! The parents had never mentioned other children who had a similar problem to their daughter. He was 2 years old, and approaching the end of the critical window of time to repair the cleft palate. The parents, however, were reluctant to heed the surgeon’s advice. They listened to their swamy, who scoffed at the surgeon’s advice, and who counseled the parents “the stars were not aligned for his surgical success.” Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon story, especially in the rural villages in India. With education and awareness by LWR’s team of social workers and surgeons, this can change. Thanks for your support!
